Our Community & Region

Welcome to Oneida County and Surrounding Area

The region is known for its beauty, natural areas, and quaint communities. In-between local cities lay vast expanses of mountains, and valleys that are waiting to be explored.

Local Area

Oneida County is Located on the Southern border of Idaho along the I-15 corridor close to Utah. Malad City is recognized as "Where Idaho Begins." In 1856, a colony of 15 families led by Ezra Barnard came to Malad Valley and established Fort Stuart. The Malad River, which meant sickly waters, was the name adopted by the locals in 1857, thus the name of the town is Malad City. A short time later the first hotel and stores were established. With the railroad arriving in 1906, the trip to Salt Lake City was only a mere four hours long. On June 19, 1910, Malad experienced a flood when a dam broke. Almost the whole city suffered losses.

Today

Today Malad City is home to the Malad High School Dragons and Malad Middle and Elementary Schools. Many successful businesses call Malad home. Banks and real estate companies are present, as well as other industries such as Jones' Confectionery, Horse Races, Hess Lumber, Hess Pumice Products (the local leader in pumice), and Thomas Electric, which has been locally owned and operated since 1956. Many family farms and ranches are still scattered across the countryside.
